Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It - Cory Doctorow, 2025

Completed 01/08/2026

This is a book I had been looking forward to getting my hands on, and one of the very few I got immediately when it came out. It is a bit farther to the left than I typically find myself, but I agree with nearly everything Doctorow has to say. This is a non-partisan issue, and one without borders for that matter.

No surprises here, but tech monopolies are too big, anti-consumer, and anti-worker. They gouge everyone, hurt the economy, and make their products worse intentionally. The problem feels close to hopeless, but there is a glimmer of hope that we are collectively over this. This book was a major factor in why I decided to start building my own webpage rather than being confined to the corporate- and algorithm- and AI-slop hellscape of social media networks.

"...consolidation, regulatory capture, enshittification." (pg 154)

Corporations have too much power and own so much we basically live in a system of technofeudalism. We are lacking any real consequences for them.
